Frequently asked questions

Starting a counselling journey can bring up many questions. At Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy, we believe in providing clear, transparent answers to help you feel confident and comfortable. Here are some of the most important topics prospective clients often ask or worry about before starting their journey with us.

“Will this actually help me?”

This is a primary concern. Many individuals worry about investing time, money, and emotional energy without seeing meaningful change. At Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy, we structure our process to be purposeful and guided by nearly 30 years of experience. We provide reassurance that your journey will be supported with direction and effective strategies.

“How much will this cost, and is it worth it?”

Financial transparency is important. Our session fees are $100 per session, with a sliding scale available to ensure accessibility. For insurance reimbursement, you can send the invoice directly to your insurance company. We accept most major credit cards, cash, or e-transfer. Our cancellation policy requires 12 hours' notice to move or cancel appointments; fees will apply for cancellations less than 12 hours in advance or for missed appointments.

“How long will this take?”

The duration of counselling varies. For Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), typically 8 sessions are needed, with more if the situation is complex. Whether it's short-term or long-term therapy honestly depends on what we discover together. Our goal is to empower you with tools and insights, not to keep you in counselling indefinitely.

“What actually happens in a session?”

You might worry counselling involves simply talking without direction or being judged. At Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy, we identify specific issues and collaborate on a treatment plan. We meet you where you are, without judgment. While strong emotions can arise, we walk with you at your speed, ensuring you feel safe and supported. Yes, we provide practical tools, handouts, and workbooks as much as you like, or less if you prefer. We also encourage "homework" because healing involves self-exploration, not just us telling you what to do. We act as a mirror, helping you see yourself through different lenses.

“Will I feel comfortable?” (Part 1)

This unspoken concern is vital for psychological safety. You are not alone; we are here walking with you on your journey to healing. We understand the fear of being misunderstood or shamed for past behaviour or addiction. Addiction is often a coping strategy for internal pain, and addressing shame and guilt is a huge part of recovery.

“Will I feel comfortable?” (Part 2)

"What if I lose emotional control during a session?” Strong emotions are not uncommon when discussing painful experiences, anxiety, depression, or addiction. If emotions arise, they are not a sign of weakness; they are often part of the healing process. My role at Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy is to ensure emotional expression remains safe, contained, and constructive. I am accustomed to helping clients regulate intense feelings, moving at a manageable pace and providing grounding techniques. You will not be pushed beyond your capacity or left overwhelmed. Sessions end when you are ready, not by a clock. Emotional release can be therapeutic when supported with structure and clinical guidance. The goal is to strengthen your ability to understand and regulate your emotions with confidence.

“Am I bad enough to need therapy?”

Therapy is not reserved for crises. You don't need to reach a breaking point. If anxiety affects your sleep, low mood impacts motivation, or behaviours like substance use become difficult to manage—or if you simply feel persistently stuck or overwhelmed—these are sufficient reasons to seek help. Psychological distress exists on a spectrum. Early intervention is often more effective. Seeking counselling is a sign of insight and responsibility for your well-being. If something in your life feels persistently distressing, confusing, or out of control, it's worth addressing. You don't have to justify your pain by comparing it to others. If it matters to you, it is clinically meaningful.

When people come to you, what kinds of problems or feelings do you most often help them work through?

At Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy, I commonly help clients navigate a wide range of challenges, including intergenerational trauma, anger management, various forms of addiction, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, PTSD, ADHD, self-esteem concerns, and relationship difficulties. My integrative approach, which includes Emotion-Focused Therapy, CBT, CPT, DBT, EMDR, and mindfulness, allows me to tailor support to your unique emotional experiences and guide you towards meaningful and lasting change.

What's special or unique about how you help people compared to other counsellors?

What distinguishes my approach at Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy is the integration of depth-oriented exploration, structured clinical direction, and nearly three decades of experience with complex mental health and addiction concerns. My work is characterized by a purposeful, goal-oriented process that seeks to understand underlying patterns driving anxiety, depression, or addictive behaviours, not just managing symptoms. I emphasize careful assessment, identifying core beliefs, and developing practical strategies for measurable changes. Sessions are focused yet provide a safe space for reflection, combining insight, accountability, and evidence-informed tools for sustainable change. My word is my bond: if for any reason I am unable to help you, I will find you a competent psychotherapist who can.

What's the most important thing someone should know or understand about starting counselling with you?

The most important thing to understand about starting counselling with me at Deep-Healing-Counselling & Psychotherapy is that the process will be structured, purposeful, and collaborative. You won't be left without direction or pushed faster than you're ready. We begin with a careful assessment to understand the underlying patterns contributing to your anxiety, depression, or addictive behaviours, then establish clear goals and a focused plan. Counselling requires honesty, effort, and openness to change, and you'll be guided by nearly 30 years of clinical experience. My role is to provide clarity, stability, and professional direction in a respectful, confidential environment. If you are willing to engage, meaningful and lasting change is possible.
